This Saturday’s race at Gulfstream Park featured a duel between Long Range Toddy (Take Charge Indy) and Big And Classy (The Big Beast) in the one-mile The Edwin T. Broome Memorial (1 mile, dirt) race, with a prize of $60,000. Certainly, the favorite was ridden by Leonel Reyes Ramos, but when it came down to the wire, Long Range Toddy was able to string together an end-to-end victory with Emisael Jaramillo in the saddle.
«He’s the kind of horse you’d want to have as a colt, the ones that give their all on the track with a lot of class,» said Victor Barboza Jr., trainer of this seven-year-old chestnut, who had moments of glory on the road to his generation’s crowns, in a cohort of stars like Omaha Beach and Improbable. He was the winner of the Rebel Stakes (G2, $750,000), held at Oaklawn Park, Arkansas, and was presented at that time by Steve Asmussen.
Four years later, he arrives in Florida, where he remains undefeated in two outings. «He came from a farm, I received him with some problems in his hooves. But I watched his videos and knew he had a lot of class,» he recalled about a process where teamwork worked to quickly nurse him back to health.
«I had to give him an easy race. That’s what happened when he reappeared. It was over 7 furlongs, the idea was for him to regain a bit of heart. Today we saw him win from start to finish. His time (1’35″80) might not be that spectacular. But I worked several horses this morning and it seems to me that the track is a bit heavy,» he emphasized.
Long Range Toddy held off the push from Big And Classy by a length, leaving The Skipper Too and Grand David to complete the rest of the positions. «I still don’t know what the next race will be. The first thing is to evaluate how he’s doing health-wise. But if we’re aiming to be present with this horse at the Sarabia meeting because his owner is from there, the journey is still long,» Barboza concluded.»

Long Range Toddy ganó el duelo
