Cipriano Gil: «Triumphing here will be my greatest challenge”

Champion jockey from La Rinconada makes his way to Gulfstream Park

Cipriano Antonio Gil Ledezma, that’s the name of another Venezuelan jockey who has been a statistical winner at La Rinconada and aims to make his presence known at Gulfstream Park, Florida. At just 24 years old and with over 500 victories in his home country, this is the resume of someone who is emerging – as of this week – on the mornings of the racetrack located in Hallandale Beach.

«Since I was a child, I always set goals for myself. I remember that when I rode pony horses in Ciudad Bolívar, I wanted to later race and win thoroughbred races. Then, when I became a leader, I dreamt of coming and succeeding at La Rinconada. And now, we’re here,» he mentions, recounting some of the stages that have unfolded at a meteoric pace for someone who was the top jockey at La Rinconada-Caracas in 2017, when he had just reached the legal age.

«Officially, I made my debut at 15 years old in 2014. The following season, I won the statistics (80 to 40) over Franklin Ceballos Jr. (Who is also in the United States), and Wilbert Leon came in third, who is campaigning in Chile,» recalls Gil, with a path similar to that of Douglas Valiente, a Venezuelan who found success at Gulfstream Park and also enjoyed applause as a champion in his country.

«When I arrived in Caracas, I only rode in restricted races for apprentice jockeys. Then, at the end of 2016, when I could compete with professional jockeys, I closed the season with 10 victories between November and December. By 2017, everything was flowing at its peak. Even as an apprentice, I was winning many races and classics, and I finished first in the statistics that year.»

However, Gil is aware that the world of racing is often an eternal carousel, from which one must only embrace each experience and squeeze out the best. «I refined many things, like crouching more in the horse’s saddle, adjusting the stirrups, loosening the reins. Changing the whip and, above all, helping the horse change its lead so it performs at its best. These things are achieved when you start riding higher-quality horses,» he reflects.

For Gil, this transitional moment is something he takes on with total naturalness. «I feel supported, by friends. To start over, there are several people who are putting me on their horses. The welcome from Víctor Barboza Jr. and José Rafael Rojas has been very good,» he emphasized, mentioning that he will have Roger Vélez as his agent.

«Triumphing here will be my greatest challenge,» he envisions, not forgetting his experiences at La Rinconada. «Many lessons, a land that allowed me to write my name on the classic calendar, many important races. Now it’s time to face this stage, with the faith in having good health, because without that, we can’t achieve anything,» he added.

Cipriano Gil is seen arriving at the racetrack before 5 am. «My goal is to work hard and achieve victories. It will be an incredible joy to be winning at any of these racetracks,» he lifts his gaze with a clear direction, in hopes that his efforts will be rewarded with the best results.

Jockey campeón de La Rinconada se abre camino en Gulsftream Park

Cipriano Antonio Gil Ledezma, ese es el nombre de otro jinete venezolano, que ha sido ganador de estadística en La Rinconada y que pretende hacer notar su presencia en Gulsftream Park, Florida. De solo 24 años de edad y con más de 500 victorias alcanzadas en su país, es la hoja de vida que quien se asoma – desde esta semana – en las mañanas del hipódromo ubicado en Hallandale Beach.

“Desde niño, siempre me impuse metas. Recuerdo que cuando montaba caballos ponys en Ciudad Bolívar, quería luego correr y ganar carreras de purasangres. Luego, cuando fui líder, soñaba con llegar y triunfar en La Rinconada. Y ahora, estamos aquí”, menciona alguna de sus etapas que se se han dado, de alguna forma, a un ritmo meteórico para quien ha sido líder de los jinetes en La Rinconada- Caracas, en 2017, cuando apenas alcanzaba la mayoría de edad.

“Oficialmente, debuté a los 15 años en el 2014. A la siguiente temporada, gané la estadística (80 a 40) sobre Franklin Ceballos Jr.(Quien también se encuentra en Estados Unidos) y tercero entró Wilbert Leon, quien cumple campaña en Chile”, recuerda Gil, con una ruta similar a la de Douglas Valiente, venezolano que marcó su éxito en Gulsftream Park y que también disfrutó de los aplausos como campeón en su país.

“Cuando llego a Caracas, solo montaba en carreras restringidas para jinetes aprendices. Luego, a finales del 2016, cuando ya podía competir con los jockeys profesionales, cerré la temporada con 10 triunfos entre noviembre y diciembre. “Ya para el 2017, todo fluyó en lo alto. Siendo aún aprendiz, ganaba muchas carreras y clásicos, y concluí primero en la estadística de ese año”.

Sin embargo, Gil está consciente que el mundo de las carreras suele ser un eterno carrusel, del cual solo queda abrazar cada experiencia y exprimirle lo mejor. “Pulí muchas cosas, como agacharme más en la silla de un caballo , recortar los estribos, abrir las brindas. Cambiar el látigo y, sobre todo, ayudar al caballo, en su cambio de manos para que dé lo mejor. Esas cosas se logran cuando empiezas a montar caballos de mayor calidad”, reflexiona.

Para Gil, este momento de transición lo asume con total naturalidad. “Siento que tengo apoyo, gente amiga. Para empezar de cero, hay varios que me están montando en sus caballos. El recibimiento de Víctor Barboza Jr, de José Rafael Rojas, ha sido muy bueno”, precisó quien tendrá a Roger Vélez como su agente.

“Triunfar acá será mi mayor reto”, se proyecta, quien no deja de lado las vivencias en La Rinconada. “Muchas enseñanzas, una tierra que me permitió escribir mi nombre en el calendario clásico, muchas carreras importantes. Ahora toca enfrentar esa etapa, con la fe en tener salud, porque sin eso no podemos lograr nada”, acotó.

Cipriano Gil se le ve arribar al hipódromo antes de las 5 am. “Mi objetivo es trabajar fuerte y que lleguen los triunfos. Será una alegría tremenda el estar ganando en alguno de estos hipódromos”, levanta la mirada con el norte bien claro, en la espera de que su empeño sea retribuido con los mejores resultados.
