Grandson of Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey, at 27 years old, has 34 horses under his care
Nolan Ramsey’s name is beginning to ring out on the tracks. Grandson of Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey, owners and breeders, who dominated the nation for nearly a decade, a history he shared intimately. Now, Nolan, at 27 years of age, is opening another chapter, taking the reins and making his way as a trainer in competitive tracks with results that look in his favor from the start.
A handful of winners, in nearly two months of campaigning, ten in all, after 31 entries, including the Ben Cat’s Stakes (6F, 75k) with Whenigettoheaven (Street Magician) at Laurel Park. «I didn’t do anything special, just be patient with the horse, until he gave me the notice of when he was ready and my job was to find him the right race,» Nolan noted of Whenigettoheaven, who was part of a group of horses he received from his grandfather Kenneth Ramsey in Gulsftream Park, Florida.
«What helped the most, at this stage, is that my grandfather taught me to Read in Daily Racing Form, look at the programs and study a handicap, so after I had time watching training these horses, I knew where to go with them,» explained Nolan Ramsey, who has a stable of 21 horses at Gulsftream Park and 13 others he moved to Laurel Park, Maryland.
Nolan is far from a novice in the racing world. What doesn’t give away his age is all that experience he absorbed from Mike Maker, whose assistant he was for the past ten years, plus the contact with so many champions. «Being behind Mike (Maker) for so long has been a great guide. Knowing how to appreciate the real condition of each horse and deciphering when he is ready,» he reflects.
Between school and the stables, Nolan walked horses on the Ramsey farm – in Kentucky – when he was just a boy, and by the age of 14 he had his first formal job with Maker, to whom he was a former and later assistant. His goal at a young age was definite, he wanted to be a trainer, but it was also clear that he needed to learn. «There I was, behind someone, to absorb everything, to acquire a base, until the time came for me to be ready and take my own path.»
Many champions marked his affinity with racing, among them Kitten’s Joy (El Prado), whom he saw win in the most important races on the Turf. Dale Romans had him, then as a stallion, in his first generation it was a lot of about 50 very talented horses, most of them I watched closely as they were trained by Maker».
However, amidst so many anecdotes, it is of Sir Dudley Digges (Gio Ponti), of whom he has a special memory. «He hadn’t said anything extraordinary in his first races, but because of his background, we thought he would do better running longer distances, so we took him to Canada, where he was born, to qualify him for the million-dollar Queen Plate Stakes at Woodbine. And he did, then in the race he was 16-1, he still won. He then went on to win at Colonial Downs another stakes and in Barbados. Sir Dudley Digges was able to win in three different countries,» he emphasized.
This is the world of racing, the world of illusions, of the impossible that the magic of faith transforms into reality. And Nolan Ramsey already releases his own motivations. «With my grandparents’ horses, we have won in Dubai also multiple Breeders, but we have knocked on the door in the Kentucky Derby and Royal Ascot. God willing, we hope to bring that joy to the family, in this chapter that is just beginning.»
No pressure, the Kentucky-born young trainer, lives day to day. «You always have to listen, be observant and be on time for your job. There are many people who know more than you, listening to them does you good, even necessary,» says Nolan, who says he is also active with all his senses with the horses.
«The horse doesn’t talk, but it gives signals of its talent. So you have to interpret them, looking at where they come from, deciphering which surface they are best suited to, and then you can lead them well,» says Nolan, while checking out a group of horses getting ready for training. Hope With Pope is one of the fillies, who will be making her debut soon and who awakens his faith. «At first she didn’t show much, but we made changes for her, for example, she didn’t like to train late. Now every week she’s doing better,» he warns.
Right now, in stable 11 at Gulsftream Park, you see a team with a rapport, unafraid of failure. «The manager may be a smart guy, but without a good team, the cart can’t move forward. Thank God, I have good gallopers, grooms, assistants, and everyone is pushing in the same direction. That gives me confidence and time to focus on my work,» he concludes.

Nieto de Kenneth y Sarah Ramsey, propietarios y criadores, que dominaron la nación por casi una década, una historia que compartió íntimamente. Ahora, Nolan, a los 27 años de edad, abre otro capítulo, tomando las riendas y abriéndose paso como trainer en escenarios competitivos con resultados que asoman a su favor desde el primer momento.
Un puñado de ganadores, en casi dos meses de campaña, diez en total, luego de 31 inscritos, incluyendo el Ben Cat’s Stakes (6F, 75k) con Whenigettoheaven (Street Magician) en Laurel Park. “No hice nada especial, solo tener paciencia con el caballo, hasta que me diera el aviso de cuando estuviera listo y mi trabajo era encontrarle la carrera correcta”, señaló Nolan en torno a Whenigettoheaven, que fue parte de un grupo de caballos que recibió de su abuelo Kenneth Ramsey en Gulsftream Park, Florida.
“Lo que más ayudó, en esta etapa, es que mi abuelo me enseñó a Leer en Daily Racing Form, a mirar los programas y estudiar un handicap, así que luego de tener tiempo mirando entrenar a estos caballos, sabía dónde ir con ellos”, explicó Nolan Ramsey, quien cuenta con un establo de 21 caballos en Gulsftream Park y otros trece que trasladó a Laurel Park, Maryland.
Nolan está lejos de ser un improvisado en este mundillo de las carreras. Lo que no delata su edad es toda esa experiencia que absorbió de Mike Maker, de quien fue su asistente en los últimos diez años, además del contacto con tantos campeones. “Estar detrás de Mike (Maker) tanto tiempo, ha sido una gran guía. Saber apreciar la condición real de cada caballo y descifrar cuándo está listo”, reflexiona.
Entre la escuela y los establos, Nolan caminaba caballos en la finca de los Ramsey – en Kentucky – cuando apenas era un niño, ya a los 14 años tenía su primer trabajo formal con Maker, de quien fue former y posteriormente asistente. Su objetivo a temprana edad estaba definitivo, quería ser trainer, pero también estaba claro que necesitaba aprender. «Allí estuve, detrás de alguien, para absorber todo, adquirir una base, hasta que llegara el momento de estar listo y tomar mi propio camino».
Muchos campeones marcaron su afinidad con los carreras, entre estos Kitten’s Joy (El Prado), al que vio ganar en las carreras más importantes sobre el Turf. Lo tenía Dale Romans, luego como padrillo, en su primera generación era un lote de unos 50 caballos muy talentosos, la mayoría los miré de cerca al ser entrenados por Maker”.
Sin embargo, en medio de tantas anecdotas, es de Sir Dudley Digges (Gio Ponti), del que guarda un especial recuerdo. “No había dicho nada extraordinario en sus primeras carreras, pero por su origen, pensábamos que le iría mejor corriendo mayores distancias, entonces lo llevamos a Canadá, donde había nacido, para clasificarlo al Queen Plate Stakes por un millón de dólares en Woodbine. Y lo logró, luego en la carrera estaba 16 a 1, aún así ganó. Luego pudo ganar en Colonial Downs otro stakes y en Barbados. Sir Dudley Digges logró ganar en tres diferentes países”, enfatizó.
Es ese el mundo de las carreras, el de las ilusiones, de lo imposible que la magia de la fe lo transforma en realidades. Y Nolan Ramsey ya suelta sus propias motivaciones. “Con los caballos de mis abuelos, hemos ganado en Dubai también múltiples Breeders, pero hemos tocado la puerta en el Kentucky Derby y Royal Ascot. Dios mediante, esperamos darle esa alegría a la familia, en este capítulo que recién comienza”.
No hay presión, el joven trainer nacido en Kentucky, vive el día a día. “Siempre se debe escuchar, ser observador y llegar a tiempo a tu trabajo. Hay muchas personas que saben más que tú, escucharlas te hace bien, inclusive necesario”, dice Nolan, quien afirma que también está activo con todos sus sentidos con los caballos.
”El caballo no habla, pero da señales de su talento. Así que debes interpretarlos, mirando su origen, descifrando en cuál superficie se acomoda mejor y así llevarlos con acierto”, refiere Nolan, mientras revisaba un grupo de caballos que se alistaba para entrenar. Hope With Pope es una de las potrancas, que debutará en breve y que despierta su fe. “Al principio no mostraba mucho, pero le hicimos cambios, por ejemplo, no le gustaba entrenar tarde. Ahora cada semana lo hace mejor”, alerta.
Ahora mismo, en el establo 11 de Gulsftream Park se observa un equipo compenetrado, sin miedo al fracaso. “Quien dirige puede ser un tipo inteligente, pero sin un buen equipo, la carreta no puede echar hacia adelante. Gracias a Dios, cuento con buenos galopadores, grooms, asistentes, y todos empujan hacia la misma dirección. Eso me da confianza y tiempo para enfocarme en mi trabajo”, concluye.
